Brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a barbecue restaurant at 1398 North E Street at West 14th Street in San Bernardino, California on May 15, 1940.

They then introduced their “Speedee Service System” in 1948 with mascot of a man with a chef’s hat on top of a hamburger shaped head whose they named “Speedee.”

Ray Kroc joined the company as a franchise agent in 1955 and went on to buy the company in 1961 for $2.7 million (the amount it took to pay each brother one million dollars after taxes).

Ray Kroc then replaced mascot Speedee with Ronald McDonald in 1967 and oversaw the companies rapid worldwide growth until he retired in 1974.
