Eliphalet Remington II was born October 28, 1793 in Suffield, Connecticut.
As the only son, he followed in his father’s footsteps and entered the family blacksmith trade at his father’s rural forge in Herkimer County, New York.
Then about 1810, his family built a family home at Kinne Corners, New York known as Remington House, listed today on the National Register of Historic Places.
Eliphalet Remington married to Abigail Paddock and went on to have three sons.
Around 1816, the 23 year old believed he could build a better gun than he could buy. So over a long winter season Remington constructed a hand-made revolutionary flintlock sporting rifle using an existing firing mechanism, but constructing the barrel himself.
Then Remington entered a shooting match with his new rifle; though he only finished second, his well-made rifle impressed other shooters.
Before Eliphalet Remington left that day, he had received so many orders that he was now officially in the gunsmithing business.
His new rifle continued to receive enough enthusiastic response that he decided to manufacture it in quantity and formed the Remington Arms Company.
By 1828, the Remington operation moved to nearby Ilion, New York, at the same site which is used by the modern Remington firearms plant.
Then in 1840, along with his three grown sons, Remington expanded his company naming it E. Remington and Sons.
What had begun as a one-man enterprise has become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of sporting arms. Before Remington formed his company, American sportsmen relied upon foreign sources for the majority of the sporting guns they used.
The production of his rifle within the reach of men who wanted and needed a good gun changed the picture permanently.
By the middle of the 19th century, his Remington rifle had become immensely popular with American sportsmen and had become one of the standard guns used in what was termed “the winning of the West.”
Eliphalet Remington died August 12, 1861.
Today, Remington It is the oldest company in the United States which still makes its original product and is the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in North America. It is also the only U.S. company which produces both firearms and ammunition domestically and is the largest U.S. producer of shotguns and rifles. Remington has also developed or adopted more cartridges than any other gun maker or ammunition manufacturer in the world. Additionally its products are distributed in over 60 foreign countries, making its distribution base and availability wider than those of its competitors.
